چکیده

I describe the graphics in relation to seven key [lexical] concepts taken from the co-text (criterion, symptom, calculation, proof, explanation, description, paradigm). By adopting a content-model for the interpretation of the graphics, and then comparing them to the key lexical concepts it is concluded that graphics function normatively in that they establish the underlying grammatical structure of concepts such as proof. This gives them a more active role in concept grammar than has been ascribed to them hitherto by commentators such as Baker and Hacker. A link is also made between the graphics and the important role of generality and prototype (ungefähr and Urbild) in the formation of our conceptframeworks.

Graphical Problems in Wittgenstein ' s Nachlaß

This paper describes some features of Wittgenstein's Nachlaß which lie on the boundary between text and graphics. These deliberately ambiguous features are introduced as part of Wittgenstein's method of using "text-experiments" comparable to "thought-experiments". These features present problems of interpretation, and therefore of representation, in print or as encoded text for computer-aided a...

Oughts and Thoughts: Rule-Following and the Normativity

Anandi Hattiangadi packs a lot of argument into this lucid, well-informed and lively examination of the meaning scepticism which Kripke ascribes to Wittgenstein. Her verdict on the success of the sceptical considerations is mixed. She concludes that they are sufficient to rule out all accounts of meaning and mental content proposed so far. But she believes that they fail to constitute, as Kripk...

Georg Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit

The Anglophone philosophical world is currently riding a swelling wave of enthusiasm for a big, dense, blockbuster of a book by the previously unknown Jena philosopher, Georg Hegel. His Phenomenology of Spirit, originally in German, now available also in English, picks up and weaves together in a surprising and wholly original way a large number of today’s most fashionable ideas. Although he ne...

The Saying/Showing Distinction in Early Wittgenstein and Its Implications

Jafar Morvarid[1]  In this paper, I shall try to clarify the saying/showing distinction and to emphasize the role of this distinction in constructing a coherent picture of language and the world. In order to properly understand the differences between the sayable and the showable, I will throw light on the limits of language and the world. I will explain why it is impossible to say the showab...

An Investigation of Norm of Belief’s Proper Formulation

That falsity is a defect in belief can be captured with a prohibitive norm holding that truth is the necessary condition for permissibility of belief. Furthermore, such a formulation avoids the difficulties encountered in earlier literature that offered prescriptive norms. The normativity of belief thesis is widely discussed in the literature. I criticise bi-conditional formulation of the norm ...
